A long time ago, in the elder days of the Kingdom, a group of the most powerful adventurers and magicians created the first Astarian clan, and endowed its members with strange and wondrous powers not previously known to mortals. For many years the members of this clan controlled the kingdom, but as they aged and grew separate, the clan which they created foundered and broke apart into separate groups, each endowed with many of the original clan's powers, and yet no longer united in their aim, indeed, often antagonistic to one another. Their battles form the basis of many of the early legends of Astarian, and the struggle for pre-eminence continues, as new splinter clans are formed (or destroyed) as time goes on. Few know how these splinter clans are formed, and this secret is well guarded by those that do.
