Heritage levels are in essence Astaria's "backyard" for leveling: They are training levels, meant to simplify the leveling experience for new players. They require much less experience and money to advance in level, and skills are gained immediately on level-up, with a small cumulative temporary bonus acquired on each level-up. Heritage level-acquired skills provide no in-guild skills, you must join a guild (and manually train) to do so. Different heritages give different skills upon "graduation" to 1/1.

Please note that there are some areas where one is unable to earn enough money to level at the rate XP is earned during heritage and the first few levels. If you find yourself in the situation of having plenty of XP but not enough cash to level, chances are good you found one of these areas. The helpline is an excellent resource for general help, including this particular topic.

For the charts below: Not all guilds allow training of skills beyond the "normal" limit of twice your player level. The earliest you are allowed to do this is at guild level 7, the maximum extra training you are allowed to get is equal to 2.5 x your player level.

It is strongly recommended that you level your Guild Level as high as you can before raising your Player Level (that is, not letting your Guild Level fall behind), as well as keeping your skills fully trained before gaining your next player level. This is because there is an xp/cash penalty imposed if you do not follow this pattern. I will spare you the maths (mudmail Palmir for details), but, for example, a level 4/2 will require 4,750xp for level 3, instead of 2,000. A level 5/2 would require 16,000xp for level 3.

Similarly, it is strongly recommended that you keep your skills trained to their maximum allowable, whether trained with plev or glev. As an extreme example of not following this advice, below is a table showing the cost of leveling up a skill to 36 if you don't start leveling it until 36. However, we imagine that people occasionally find themselves in this situation, or may for some reason choose to do this. You will note there is effectively a penalty for not maintaining your skills along with your level - this penalty increases with your level, so if you forget to train a couple things while low level it's not nearly this drastic. Shown below is the extreme example of not training a skill until you reach max level:

FAR TOO MUCH MATH DISCUSSION

The curve of the normal skill training schedule is exponential - which means the higher your level when you start training those skills, the bigger the jump between each skill point will be. Simply divide the xp needed by the skill level to find your multiplier for determining xp cost. For extra fun, ask Palmir for the graph he made from the above skill data. Note that the cash ratio of 25 falcon/1000 xp stays constant for training, no matter what variables are affecting it - this ratio applies to all skill levels no matter how far behind it is.

For example:

A level 23 mage decides he wants to train swim, a skill that's been neglected since he joined the guild. Level 23 normally trains to 46, which costs 43643. Dividing 43643 by 46 is 1014 (rounded). So each skill point will cost [skill level] * 1014. Skill level 1 will be 1014, skill level 2 will be 2028, etc. A spreadsheet program makes the full calculation trivial.

Trivia: The slope of the line for training from skill 71 to 72 (that is, (171,720-169,335)/1) is the same as 72/171,720. This is the only level for which this is true.

*UPDATE
The leveling costs have changed in the game. In general, the leveling costs in experieicen points are now 20% lower then what this document details. For example, 5/5 instead of costing 16000 experience (as documented in this article) now costs 12800.
